After being mentored by modern-day indie icons Chloe Zhao and Sean Baker, first-time filmmaker Hannah Peterson is ready to make her mark with her emotional and compassionate drama, The Graduates, which shows life in the aftermath of a terrible tragedy. It premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival where it received a strong reception from critics and audiences alike, and awarded DP Carolina Costa the Best Cinematography Award. Written and directed by Peterson, the drama follows the lives of a community trying to move on one year after a local school shooting. The film stars Mina Sundwall, Alex Hibbert, Yasmeen Fletcher, Ewan Manley, John Cho (who also executive produces), Maria Dizzia, and Kelly O’Sullivan.
Here’s the official synopsis:
A powerful and sharply introspective coming-of-age drama, THE GRADUATES follows a young woman, Genevieve (Mina Sundwall), as she prepares to graduate high school after a tragic event. As she navigates an uncertain future alongside a community searching for ways to heal, they turn to each other to find hope and a way forward.
The Future of Film is Female, under their first distribution partnership deal, will release The Graduates in theaters across the U.S. starting on Friday, November 1, starting with Metrograph in New York. Check out the official trailer and poster below.
